I cannot make the argument that one cause is greater than another - all are as equally just and equally deserving for any donation.

What I can say is this. Alzheimer’s, or any brain deteriorating condition such as dementia, can be hard to watch and digest. It is something I have watched eat away at a great man who is very close to me, a man who possessed an equally great mind. The man I am speaking of is my grandfather. Once a professor of engineering, he is now a man trapped in a brain that is rebelling against the very intellect he once possessed (and this intelligence I admit, can still come in heartwarming flashes). It is a hard thing to stomach, knowing that one of the smartest people you know may not remember your name. It is harder still, when eventually they are so separated from what they once were, that you have to remind yourself that they ever did know your name. To stop, or at the very least attempt to prevent this happening to others close to you, is the reason for my fundraising. And at the very least, it can provide a consolation to those we know who have been afflicted by such a disease.
